Never, ever, open an attachment if you don't know what it is. You can open strange emails, just DON"T download the attachment. Ever.

You just need to get some protection on your computer.
Get some virus scan software and get a firewall.
If you are real crafty you should be able to find versions of both of these for free.+)
] But if you cant, spending money would be worth it.
I HAVE to open emails all the time that are from unknown senders so I have protected my computer well.
The Blackice network defender program I have is the corporate edition and it works so well it wont even let a newly installed program run without first gettting the ok from me. Plus with the security settings it will automatically block anyone who tries to port probe my computer.
Look into it. Protecting your computer is VERY important.
Regards,
KC

Bro...
As a network technician for a state agency... I will tell you that a firewall will do nothing for viruses (not that it is a bad idea however). A firewall will stop people like me from getting in and actively perusing your files and/or "lighting the fuse" on malicious code though -/
You definitely should get a anti-virus prog such as Mcafee or Norton and keep them updated FREQUENTLY. If you did not open the attachment you did not execute the malicious code and you are ok more than likely. Considering that Hotmail caught it also is a sign that you did not execute the virus locally on your box. The viruses that you don't have to open to get dinged by them usually are URL or web pages attached to the e-mail with embedded active-x controls that do the damage.
So... in a nutshell, Kaotik is right... get a anti-virus prog and if you are using Windows XP turn on the built in firewall AND get a hardware firewall such as a LinkSys if you have cable or DSL.

The firewall that I spoke of will notify you of ANY rogue exacutable files attempting to run on your computer and that it what a virus is.

Right...
I'm not gonna get technical here... but a software firewall is inherently succeptible to certain types of attacks whereas a hardware firewall is not. I agree with you fully that one should have a firewall but if I get past your software firewall and "light off" a "rogue executable"... it's too late... I gat'cha. I can run a buffer overflow on your Black Ice Defender or what have you that will bring them to their knee's... This is all well documented. These types of firewalls will, however, stop the casual harasser.
A software firewall is better than no firewall as a software firewall will alert you to intrusion attempts (that it can detect that is) and suspicious executable activity trying to be launched from certain incoming ports... But an anti-virus program is ESSENTIAL.
Really... one should have at least a software firewall... Hardware if possible (they are CHEAP!) and definitely a virus checker... Just trying to help ya bro's out with info... I don't mean to be argumentative... that's not my way.

Hey bro, I just got a new computer and have XP installed, but I didn't know about a "built-in" firewall. I do have a Firewall/Virus Software Installed, but any 'added' protection is always nice. Can you pass some further info? Thanks bro!

It's fairly easy... you need to go to the Control Panel (Note: if you have not switched your control panel view to "classic view" you should... in the upper left corner of control panel simply click on "switch to classic view")
Once you are in Control Panel find "network connections" and click that icon. From this window you will see either a dialup connection if you use a modem or a "local area connection" if you use broadband to access the internet.
Right click the connection icon and click on properties. This will bring up the connection properties... click the "advanced" tab on the top right and then place a check in the "protect my computer or network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet"...
That's it! This will help a lot as it is intrinsic to the window kernel and not as succeptible to buffer attacks...
Hope that helps...

Thanks bro! For whatever reason, it was already "checked" so I guess I've been good to go. I certainly appreciate you taking the time to explain that. Thanks again bro! Take care! /t\

Yep, as a firewall put on a server means nothing when you've got a fat ass woman in her office with the door closed going to some site called male-virgin something or another and downloading a screen saver and it wsa infected. Infected her pc only, but if she would have saved to the F drive on the server then we would have problems. She used the 3 D's on the whole situation. Denied, denied, denied! ROTFLMAO
