Rest is very important, that cannot be stressed to much.
I do think people run around in the gym afraid to put to much work into a set/sets because they are afraid to "OVERTRAIN" Your body is very tuff, with the right amount of REST I believe the body can take just about anything.
When I was into olympic lifting I grew accustomed to long, excruciating 2.5 hour workouts. Guess what I just kept getting stronger and bigger.
When I got into BB everyone said I was overtraining, so I lightened up on the workouts. Resulting in less gains then I got when I started with the heavy hitting. I believe the training should be cycled. However I am not saying you should go out and start hitting 20 sets a bodypart. Do I think you would grow? Yes. Do I think you should run that program for an extended period of time? NO, absolutely not. But I do think experinced lifters could afford to do a little more. Just my .02 cents
