I have never heard of particular usage before, but I would definitely not use heparin unless it is prescribed. Heparin is a potent thrombolytic. If you injure yourself or have the smallest bleed anywhere internally, you can kiss your ass goodbye because you WILL bleed to death. Personally, I have never seen a patient that has been prescribed heparin. It is generally used in the ER or ICU setting. Doctors will send a patient home with a prescription of coumadin, not heparin. As a paramedic and nurse, I can tell you that while working on the ambulance, I rarely get orders to give heparin. It is dangerous without a controlled setting. By controlled setting I mean constant monitoring of vital signs (EKG, Blood pressure, etc..) Don't do it, bottom line.
